So as we sit here now in 2018, part way through January, we are reflecting on some of those projects that captured our interest in 2017 and which are an inspiration to us all.

After years in the planning and having to overcome a whole lot of unknowns due to the speeds that are ultimately to be attempted, 1000mph in fact, it has to be the Bloodhound SSC project that grabbed our attention in 2017, when the car undertook preliminary tests in late 2017.  We have however, been following the project since it’s inception, having witnessed the last land speed record, Thrust SSC in 1997, and the one before, Thrust2 in 1983.  Also the project is being supported by companies we have worked with in the past, including Rolls-Royce, who is one of the main sponsors and supplier of the EJ200 jet engine.

We will continue to watch the project Bloodhound SSC as the team build up to the next milestone of 500MPH which is planned for October 2018, having already hit over 200MPH in October 2017.

From one project covering very high speeds and one which is perhaps not that environmentally friendly, to the project that only this week has captured our interest in 2018, dubbed as Britain’s Megaproject, which is the creation of a coast to coast forest, spanning approximately 120 miles from Liverpool to Hull.  The plans were unveiled on Sunday, by the UK government, to create a new forest that will create a broad rib across Northern England.

If fully realised the forest will ultimately contain 50 million new trees, stretched in a dense 62,000-acre patchwork. The new forest will repopulate one of the least wooded parts of the country and also provide a band of newly greened landscape to escape to from the many big cities located nearby.

The goal of a thick green ribbon is still a long way off, of course. So far, the government has pledged just an initial £5.7 million of the £500 million needed to fully realize the project. But what’s significant about the plan is that it amps up a transformation that is in fact already underway—it is actually the second major attempt in recent years to re-green the English landscape.

So we will be watching both projects with great interest as they progress through 2018 and start to hit their next major milestones.

What projects caught your interest or inspired you in 2017 and what projects will you be watching in 2018 ??

“If you get the chance, take some time out of your day to watch the TED talk by Jim Hemerling on Change and how to lead in an era of constant change.”

Now, let’s examine some of the points that Jim discusses during his TED talk:

Self Transformation Project – people are enthused and excited by their own self transformation project – for example when they are training for an event such as a marathon.

However, on the flip side:

Organisational Transformation – people are not enthused or excited, since they immediately fear / think about job losses

So how can we encourage or help people feel the same about organisational transformation as they do about organisational transformation ?  Especially when as Jim sets out, that we live in an “era of always on transformation !”

Leaders should focus on 5 strategic imperatives, which focus on putting people first:

1 – Inspire through purpose – connect with the wider team and employees to give them a purpose through the provision of support and development to inspire them for the future

2 – Go all in – think about initiatives that will drive growth and investment to develop not only the leadership team but also the employees / workforce.  It shouldn’t be always about reducing headcount, it should be about recognising and growing the existing employees / workforce to support the change and future state

3 – Enable people with capabilities they need to succeed during transformation – provide training and development to employees / workforce to ensure they have the skills and capabilities to succeed along the way

4 – Instill a culture of continuous learning – provide as part of the transformation and beyond a culture within the company that empowers the employees / workforce to operate within a living learning culture.  Give easy access and time out to learning, whether computer based, classroom based or indeed external training.

5 – Specifically for leaders – the best leaders are those who are”inclusive” leaders, who reach out to gain the hearts and minds of his / her workforce.  And to ask the questions of “what are you seeing that I am missing?”

In summary

Some really insightful and key strategies being discussed by Jim as part of his TED talk.  Our view is simple, your company is only as good as your people.  Give them the opportunities to develop and grow, as well as to speak up and provide feedback / ideas to increase the companies productivity.  By doing so, you are empowering your workforce to help you steer the correct course and in doing so, will automatically gain the trust and support of your biggest asset and ally to make the transformation – your employees !

We thought it would be helpful to gather a list of the top 5 apps we use on a regular basis for both our business and for supporting us as part of delivering / managing projects.

So here it is in order of use:

In at number 1 is:

Microsoft OneNoteOneNote by Microsoft.  This is a great tool for capturing all of your project notes in a secure area which is easily searchable and accessible across devices.  We previously used Evernote, however, although this application is very good, it does not allow the embedding of excel, word or powerpoint files which is a very powerful attribute of OneNote.  OneNote also comes bundled as part of Microsoft Office suite, which most organisations have deployed.

Number 2:

Apple RemindersReminders by Apple.   This is great especially if you have bought in to the Apple ecosystem as we have, as the reminders sync across your devices – MacBook, iPad and iPhone.  You can categorise in to work or personal.  It’s also really easy to ask Siri to add a reminder to the specific to do list, specifying either a time or when you arrive at a specific location.  You can share categories and their associated reminders / to do lists, with other members of your team or household.  It’s also free, provided you have an Apple device which makes it even better.

Number 3:

Bria iPhone edition by Counterpath.  This is great for connecting your iPhone to your Voip telephone system, so that you never miss a call from a prospective customer or indeed from any other stakeholders.  The app in our opinion is the best / most stable solution for enabling you to turn your phone in to a Voip / softphone and connects to the most popular Voip / softphone service providers.  This app is not free, however, it’s worth it!

Number 4:

Zoho InvoiceZoho Invoice by Zoho.  This app allows for multiple projects to be captured, ensuring accurate time management records, through it’s timesheet capturing facility.  Making it super easy for you and your team to capture the amount of time spent working on a specific project, this can be done via the stopwatch type facility, start and end times or the specific  hours.  This app is also free.

Number 5:

ExpensifyExpensify by Expensify.  We use this app for capturing all expenses incurred, related to either the specific project or indeed from our business perspective.  It’s possible to add specific categories for the expenses and also to flag whether they are billable to the client or re-imbursible.  The app allows for quick entering of expenses using its smartscan facility (limited to around 10 scans per month for non paid app subscription) or alternatively you can simply add a photo of your expense to the details which you add in manually.  If you add in manually you can add some rules based on the Merchant information added, for example if you added Starbucks it would automatically add the expense to a refreshments category.  This is all configurable through the website, which then replicates / syncs, with the phone or tablet app.

You will have noticed that we have not specifically highlighted any project management software, this is simply because we always utilise the available software provided by the clients / customers with whom we work and any supporting governance tools for tracking and capturing of Risks, Issues, Assumptions, Decisions and CR’s (CRAID items)

We are bigs fans of Formula 1™, enjoying the great team effort and advanced technologies involved in competing at the pinnacle of motorsport.  Being a British based company, we are bigs fans of Lewis Hamilton, having followed him from his early days at McLaren F1, where he won his first Formula 1 world championship in 2008, through to his current team, Mercedes F1 AMG.

The Mercedes Formula 1 team have their headquarters in Brackley UK, in a purpose built facility, which once used to be home to the Brawn F1 team, who helped Jenson Button achieve his world championship in 2009.  The team through five shifts, supported by more than 700 employees work 24 hours a day, seven days a week on design, development and manufacturing activities. More than 250,000 working hours go into the design of a Formula 1 car, and a further 200,000 hours plus are spent on production. Only during the two-week summer break and on Christmas Day do the workshops in Brackley fall silent.  It is through this incredible dedication and team effort that Mercedes F1 remain in such a prominent position on the Formula One grid.

However, 2017 has been a season of ups and downs for Lewis Hamilton and the team.  In Austria the results were not good.  Although in the next race, the British Grand Prix, Lewis’s home grand prix at Silverstone, not only did he obliterate the field with his stunning pole position time, he also dominated the race, winning by a clear 14 seconds from his teammate and closing the world championship to one point at the halfway point in the season.

So, how could Lewis and the Mercedes F1 team have a poor performance in Austria, only 2 weeks before, then come to the British GP and dominate the whole weekend ?

Their are two main factors:  the first is a highly motivated team, at the Mercedes headquarters, who works 24 hours a day.  The second is as a result of data and the analytics software / tools to determine where the time is being lost.  It is this data which allows the team to focus on making the right decisions about what changes need to be made to the car, to make it more reliable, faster and more competitive.

Mercedes F1 team for 2017, have seen the importance of this data and how time critical it can be in terms of being able to view and assimilate the next steps from this data.  So much so that rather than waiting for the car to enter the pits, the data is transferred via a wifi connection, before the car arrives back to the pits.  So the data is transmitted before or without the need to plug in computers to the car.   This data is in turn sent back to the engineers at the Mercedes factory in the UK., for them to assess where changes can be made with regards to short term gains or longer term gains, as in the performance change from the Austrian GP to the British GP.   The Mercedes F1 car, employs around 200 physical sensors, which log up to 1,000 channels of data, generating 2 Gigabytes per hour of data.

Their are many analytics tools and software available on the market today, however, the main players are SAP, Tibco and Microsoft Dynamics.  The Mercedes F1 team having formed a partnership with Tibco to provide them with the analytics software and tools to support their decision making for 2017.

With regards to the Mercedes Formula 1 team and other F1 teams, the data analytics tools provide the following technologies and decisions:

Interconnected Technology and Data

Formula One™ engineering teams rely on analytics software to guide them through data from aerodynamic advances, fuel efficiency, renewable energies, and crash protection to make innovations possible that benefit the F1™ community as well as the general public.

Augmented Team Work

Analytics enable all race participants, from pit crew and tire partners to engineers and drivers, to quickly identify where the next improvement is needed. Data is not only the common language towards performance but also, the rally cry of F1™ victory.
Split-second Decisions

Streaming analytics are able to capture large volumes of data produced by the car’s sensors and compare it to constantly changing conditions to allow teams to seize short-lived opportunities and make the right decision, when it matters most.

Data analytics is key to decision making and team effort

Data analytics tools and software act like a digital nervous system, allowing you to build intelligence in your business, generate actionable insights in real time and let you capitalize on them. The platform letting you source the right data, analyze it with various techniques, and implement the resulting insights as a closed-loop solution with built-in continuous learning.

So, you can see how important and key it is for the Formula 1 teams to compete at the highest level with the other teams at the pinnacle of motorsport.  However, with the right data and the right software tools configured to your business, you can put the data to work at every level of your organization. Arm employees with information most relevant to their roles, decisions, and actions to build knowledge, experience, differentiation, and an extraordinary ability to act in ways that delight customers.
In Summary
Your data is a gold mine and will be the key to gain the advantage over your direct competitors, as businesses continue to transform over the next 5 years through ongoing digital transformation efforts.

The Greater Manchester area is shaping up to be next the techno hub in Europe. It’s the ideal place for startups, and companies that want to grow organically from the roots up, and London based companies have seen the promise of the area and are either planting their own seed offices in Greater Manchester or uprooting their offices from the capital to the northern region. Pushing the digital transformation boundaries further are FinTech startups and companies already in operation in the region. FinTech is arguably the biggest disruption in the way we do business and live our lives. It’s been described as a disruptive way of using technology to drive economic value in ways we didn’t think possible.

Why Greater Manchester?

Manchester is a melting pot of talents, its universities have world class computer engineering and sciences programs, and 85,000 people have migrated to the northern region for better lives – opportunities as well as standard of living. People in the region have the “can-do mentality” and the Greater Manchester area has that real energy that has proven to synchronize with the tech and innovation vibe. For tech companies like Peak, the area has the right business conditions to succeed, the talents to help them from roots up, access to capital and travel connections. These are all in the area.

Another arsenal of the northern region is that it’s the location of the Graphene Institute, leading the world in knowledge-based graphene commercialization and technologies enabling manufacturers to come up with solid smart technologies and products that will revolutionize the way we live. This puts Manchester in the global playing field as more jobs and investments are made from graphene tech products.

How FinTech Comes Into the Region’s Playing Field?

Investment, capital and the shift in how business is being created, done and delivered is where FinTech comes in. Financial Technologies or FinTech by definition means the evolving intersection of financial services and technology. It’s now changing the way companies do business, technologies that disrupt sectors such as bill payments, money transfers, loans, fundraising and asset management. It’s the financial niche that flows with trends on how people are choosing to live their lives including how they make a living, work, and invest. It has the unadulterated essence of bringing to the masses what used to be only available to the elite – transparency and accessibility. The legacy of PayPal – an online system that uses electronic payments, an alternative to paper methods has now pivoted to other financial services that are faster, efficient, more transparent, accessible through multiple devices and cheaper. Technologies from startups are changing the game in giving financial services to people in everything from payments to fundraising which is now called crowdfunding and regional transfers.

In the forefront of this FinTech services are boutique banks such as GP Bullhound which opened their Manchester office in 2013.   Crowdfunding platforms have followed suit with the opening of the Crowdcube office in the northern quarter of the city.  AccessPay is another FinTech company that moved from London to Manchester with £2 million pounds of fresh funds. The company is expanding to the US and is looking to recruit 60 new talents.

As Greater Manchester is in the forefront of digital transformation in Europe, and becoming a global player in technologies and innovations; FinTech has taken root in the area to flow with the current trend in providing faster and cheaper services that big banks can only dream of at the moment. Hopefully the innovations started by these technologies are picked up by other sectors as well, such as healthcare and insurance. All the digital transformation from disruption brought about by technologies and innovations comes from the northern region of Greater Manchester.

Digital Transformation.

The meaning of those two words is radically different depending on where an organization is aligned technologically, but no matter what the definitions, the overall result is the same.

It means change.

For some companies, it may be the actual systems they use everyday in business while for others, it may be an entirely new business model based on eCommerce or cloud-based storage.  A common thread uncovered in a recent Microsoft survey of private businesses showed a majority of leaders felt that their current business model would need to be heavily modified within the next five years to continue to be relevant.

Other data from Microsoft suggests this could be linked directly to the companies themselves.  The average age of the companies that make up the SMP 500 has dropped from the historical average of nearly 58 years to less than 15 and continues to fall.  By their very nature, younger companies move to develop new paradigms more aggressively and are actively seeking new solutions to traditional industry problems through technology.  At the same time, the connectivity of people via technology has never been better and these younger companies are able to hire highly skilled individuals from any market in the world to aggregate their business model.  The result is free thinkers not bound by geography who have been exposed to innovative ideas.

Another key point of this is the move from “experience” to data.  The successful company of today is able to clearly understand key data from their clients – not in terms of “good” or “bad” but in tangible metrics – 15%, 75%, “yes”, “no”.

Thus, new technology is implemented and acted upon in new companies and new industries far faster than at any time in history.

Digital Transformation is made more relevant when the sum of any company’s data can be stored securely in the Cloud and accessed easily from nearly any device.  The infrastructure to make changes is now accessible to any size company and the cost of the technology to do so has plummeted – taking with it one of the largest traditional objections to enhancing company business models.

So what does 2017 hold for companies looking to transform?

For starters, companies of all sizes need to clearly understand the goals of any transformation.  This starts with rethinking how the customer can interact with the organization – and is usually a very tough process for any company.  Companies using a “design thinking” model use a solution focused, not problem focused, system to design the desirable solution for clients and is critical to understanding how the company can use technology in the next model.

The overall results for a digital transformation in any size company stems from the basic move to engage the entire culture in a digital model.  Every aspect of the company – from Marketing, Finance, Sales, and Human Resources has to be engages in the transformation or the culture will never truly be in the digital age.  It may be difficult to think of creative minds in a digital culture, but the result of doing so allows you to channel artisanal energies into the new model.

No matter the industry, the use of imbedded technology is nearly complete – the overall infrastructure has been built and now the next step is to change not the look of the company but the way business is actually approached.  In many ways, the disruptions to come echo back to the first active use of computers in the 1980s and how they first impacted models.

Competitive businesses now, as they did then, will engage and seek to  and build successful models based on a full inclusion of technology.

Following on from the acquisition of LinkedIn by Microsoft, it is likely that we will see some significant changes as it is brought in line with the Microsoft Ecosystem and Office 365 solution.

It looks like from information we have seen, that LinkedIn are planning a major update and this may result in certain functionality being removed, in a similar way to when LinkedIn has in the past removed such components as LinkedIn answers.

To ensure that you have a copy of your data including connections and activity it is possible to request a LinkedIn data archive from LinkedIn.  Our advice would be to make an initial request for this LinkedIn data archive file and then ensure that you make a note to request this information on a rolling basis moving forward to ensure that your LinkedIn data is not erased as a result of functionality changes.

We have set out below, how you can request this LinkedIn data archive file from LinkedIn:

1. From within LinkedIn web page you should look to locate your profile picture in the top right of the browser screen and then select to reveal the following options:

LinkedIn account profile settings
2. From within the above screen you should select the Privacy & Settings – manage – option to be presented with the below screen:

LinkedIn account settings
3. And from within the above screen you should scroll down until you see the option entitled, Getting an archive of your data, by selecting the change option, which will then result in the below screen being shown:

LinkedIn data archive request
4. From within the above screen you simply need to select the Request Archive, which will result in LinkedIn providing you with an initial cut of the data and then within 24 hours the more detailed full history of your information.

Conclusion

As we have suggested previously in the article it is worth considering including a request for data on a more regular basis.  This is especially the case  with regards to the uncertainty around what impact the acquisition of LinkedIn by Microsoft will have on the development of future functionality and removal of existing functionality.
